How to avoid this:

1) Remove spool from frame and wash. You can take it into the shower at the end of the day, but that is not enough. You’ll want to soak it in warm water with soap for about an hour. DON’T leave it in the water overnight; a quick soak loosens the salt, a long soak will penetrate the sealed drag and other parts of the reel.

2) Scrub line, reel, and spool with warm water and dish soap.

3) Rinse reel frame and spool and layout to air dry. Keep spool and reel frame  separate during drying process.
