Bear Grylls Ultimate Knife$32-$50
Edward Michael “Bear” Grylls is a British adventurer, writer, philanthropist, and television star. He is best known for his series Man vs. Wild. Everyone has heard of Bear Grylls. He is the ultimate survival man, dropping himself into nearly impossible life and death situations from which he must try and get his self out of using only the tools he has with him and his natural environment. Now one tool that is almost essential to his survival in these near death encounters is a reliable and sturdy survival knife.
Since he is probably the most recognized face on TV when it comes to of survival and outdoor adventure, it’s no wonder Gerber uses his name on their best machetes. Bear trained from a young age in martial arts, and went on to spend three years as a soldier in the British Special Forces. It was here that he perfected many of the skills that his fans all over the world enjoy watching him battle against Mother Nature. In addition, Bear Grylls is one of the youngest climbers to summit of Mount Everest. Whatever knife Bear uses is one you want to have in your arsenal!
Overall, this knife is top quality and you are going to instantly fall in love with it. It has so many practical uses that don’t restrict it to being just a survival/outdoors knife. If you are a fan of using fixed blades as your every day carry, then this is definitely the knife I would recommend as it comes with a high quality fixed sheath which can be attached to your belt if needed. Do be honest, you are not going to find a better survival knife out there than the one made used by the man himself. As stated on the official Gerber Website “It’s loaded with innovations that won’t normally be found in any other fixed blade knife” meaning you are really getting the cream of the crop with this blade here. Let’s now take a more in-depth look at this knife to see why it is so damn great.
- Molded rubber grip and knurled striking surface butt cap
- Saw ground back blade
- Integrated fire starter with integrated diamond sharpener
- Key ground-air communication patch
- Emergency micro lanyard whistle
A survival knife is going to need a really high-quality blade, no doubt about it. If it doesn’t then it is practically useless and can leave you in a bad situation with no way out. Luckily, the Gerber Bear Grylls ultimate fixed blade knife has just that. The knife features High-quality carbon stainless steel which ensures that it is able to deal with all your cutting and chopping needs, whilst still being able to maintain a razor sharp edge. Furthermore, as you would expect in a Bear Grylls survival knife, is that it works fine in all weather conditions whether it be snow, rain or sunny, this blade will stay strong and not crack or chip.
Another beautiful feature of this survival knife is that it is partially serrated meaning that it is able to easily perform cutting tasks such as chopping dead wood for a fire – something you made need if you find yourself in a survival situation. I found it kept a razor-sharp edge reasonably well, but I did need to sharpen it a bit more often than I would have liked, to be honest.
The handle is practically just as useful as the blade on the Bear Grylls ultimate survival knife, which isn’t something that you would normally expect on a knife. This handle is jam-packed with incredible features that are essential in a survival situation. To start with, the blade has a molded rubber grip which is great for ensuring you can always maintain a tight hold on this knife. It also features a finger stop/groove section to ensure that you won’t slip when the knife is placed under pressure. This makes it really useful, especially when it is raining or wet and you would normally find your hand slipping.
The handle also features a built in knurled striking surface butt cap that is perfect for crushing objects in the wild. For example, if you are stuck out in the bush and find a tasty nut you wish to dive into, then just simply whack it few times with the butt cap and the insides spill out. However, one negative thing I would have to say about the butt cap is that it can be easily broken so don’t try and hit it onto hard of an object. Attached to the bottom of the blade it also has an integrated whistle which allows you to attract attention if needed, something that all survival knives should have.
Sheath + Tools
Most blades features stop right there, but not with the Bear Grylls ultimate survival knife! The sheath on this blade is also really good and useful as it features an integrated diamond sharpener. This is nearly essential in a survival situation where you might find yourself with a dull blade. All you need to do is simply flip open the sheath to reveal the sharpener and sharpen away! This allows you to get that razor sharp edge no matter where you are. The sheath also secures and locks the blade in place meaning that if you are able to run, jump and climb without risking your knife falling out. Furthermore, on the back of the sheath, you will find some basic air to ground signals which are great for alerting others if you are in trouble.
Attached to the sheath as well is the fire starter. This is actually a really nice addition from Bear and the team at Gerber and is really useful in a survival situation. All you need to do is simply pull it out and strike it along the pre-designed groove and bam, you have fire.
Overall, the Bear Grylls ultimate Knife truly is a one of a kind survival knife with all the bells and whistles you would come to expect from the man himself. It really has every survival situation in mind to ensure that you are always adequately prepared. I would definitely recommend this knife for those who want a really good quality, yet affordable knife, that they are able to rely upon if they run into a survival situation. But like I said before, it also has many other practical uses and is still a great (larger) every day carry knife.
